Yoga

My Living Well program isn't all about food and diet.  I'm trying to completely overhaul my lifestyle so I lead a healthy, balanced life.  For the past few weeks I've been attending a yoga class at my local health club.

I've never really been a fan of yoga.  I once went to a yoga class in London.  The instructor had this really deep, slow voice.  She made us lie on our yoga mats and pretend we were a fish out of water, flapping around and gasping for air.  I seriously had to stop myself from laughing aloud during the class!  The yoga class I've been going to here in Brisbane is really good.  I really like the instructor's style - no dead fish!

I can't take photos of my class because the yoga room is dark and there's a privacy issue, but we do lots of downward dog, Plank pose - this one is really good for upper body strength, and child's pose

My instructor is really good.  I get such a good workout during the class which I never thought I'd get from yoga.  It's not all sitting cross-legged with your fingers on your knees. The poses improve strength and flexibility, and the meditation at the beginning and end of the class help to calm my mind and body.

You don't need any fancy equipment to do yoga, but I bought my own pink Gaiam mat with pretty white flowers on it, and some Lorna Jane yoga gear.  Well if you're going to do something, do it with style I say, and the mat's so much nicer than the smelly blue ones at the gym!

Have you tried yoga?  Do you have a favourite type or pose?

  1. I love my yoga too Kylie.
I used to do Yogalates which is a combination of Pilates and Yoga but more recently I've concentrated on just yoga and building up strength. The Pilates was more of a workout as the instructor flowed through poses much quicker. I particularly like the fact that you can keep learning and adjusting your pose to suit and feel that you are progressing...even if it's slowly. My aim is to keep practising at home, but finding the dicipline to do this is challenging. Glad you're enjoying your class.

    1. Oh how funny! Do you remember the comedian Jean Kittson when she use to be Candida (the lycra clad yoga instructor) on The Big Gig? - well I think of her.

    1. Why do they always have to talk about forests and what's with the voice?

  7. Hey Kylie :) I've just started doing yoga again after a very long break (like 8 years long!) and I love it, but gee I am nowhere near as flexible as I used to be! Love that top :)

  9. I did yoga when I was pregnant and I loved it...it was so gentle and relaxing and a great way to take a moment out of your week and just concentrate on your body and your baby.
I haven't been back to it since having Baby C...turns out chasing after a fourteen month old keeps me busy and fit!
But at some point in the future I would love to try yoga again.

And how great is Lorna Jane...I can always find something in that store!

  10. Hi Kylie, found your through Planet Baby.
I have just bought Lorna Jane gear so I can start some classes. Haven't quite got there yet, just trying to get my sleep patterns sorted so I can get up early enough to go! Yoga and pilates is something I would like to try. Just need a few more hours in my day!

  11. What a cute ensemble! You're right, the clothes aren't really that important when it comes to yoga, but hey, there's nothing wrong with looking great while doing yoga! The practice is supposed to relax your body and your mind, and whoever said you couldn't look good doing it? Hahaha!
