DIY Light Fittings - A Quick Makeover

Hi.  Do you have ball lights in your house?  You know the really cheap do-it-yourself glass ball light fittings.  Well my whole house was full of them when we bought it.

Not the prettiest light fitting?  Over the years we have replaced many of the light fittings in our house, but I still have a few of these insect-filled balls haunting me.  I decided enough was enough and I was going to replace them myself.  Not being an electrician, my only option was to visit the shops for some DIY light fittings.  I must say I was pleasantly surprised.  The range of DIY lights on offer has improved greatly.  This is what I cam home with.

A beige fabric lampshade with pretty rows of crystals hanging down.  I hung this one in our staircase.  This is what it looks like lit up.

This almost Moroccan style one is now at the end of our bedroom.

and finally this waterfall style chandelier in now in my walk-in-wardrobe.

It makes a pretty pattern on the ceiling when it's lit up.

It's a little bit like Fun and VJ's Murano chandelier here, that Anita used to replace her ball light.

DIY lights are so easy to install.  You simply remove the light globe.  Unscrew the collar on the batten, remove the existing DIY light fitting, place the new DIY light fitting in place, and rescrew the collar onto the batten.  Done in less that 5 minutes and it can completely change the look of your room.  The best bit is - If I decide I don't like them later on, I can just change them again.  No need to call an electrician.

  6. The DIY selection has really improved - these look great, especially the first one. I am lucky that I have a live-in electrician, but like all homes of tradesmen, there are so many lights and electrical bits that need fixing/updating around here it's not funny. Oh well :)

  8. 3 years later, I still have quite a few of the ball lights. They replaced the horrible plastic Chinaman's hats shades the builders put in!I took them from our old house we demolished so I didn't have to look at bare globes! Good to know there are some lovely DIY ones around, as I'll eventually replace the balls as well!

    1. Seems there are a few of us stuck with ball lights. At least you've got the light by your clothes line now.

  11. Kylie, they are all so gorgeous and I love the one in your walk in robe. I have a conundrum at the moment with our bathroom lighting. We have one of those square four heat lamps, fan sucker things. Should I replace it with something like the ones that you've shown above or should I stick with practical - I just don't know :(

    1. I'm having the same conundrum Brenda. I think I'm going to keep the IXL Tastic in the ceiling, then add 2 wall sconces either side of the mirror above the vanity. Am also toying with the idea of placing a drop pendant over the bath, but worried we'll hit our heads on it. Is there somewhere else in your bathroom you could add some feature lighting without loosing the practical fan/light?

    2. Well that's got me thinking outside the square anyway - thanks Kylie!

  14. Those are wonderful DIY lights! We have lots of lighting fixtures at home and they all look so old and out of style. Since I don’t have enough money to replace them all, I will try my best to get creative and customize them.

  15. Hello! There will be a certain style that you will be attracted to, for example you may like modern decor or you could have a more old fashioned style of home. Choose something that will suit the style of your home and match the theme of each room. You do not need to have the same light fittings throughout your entire home. Cool collections! :)
